Our Great Tuscan Wines

Our objective is to produce wine that deeply respects all the characteristics of both the territory and the Prugnolo gentile variety. We seek to create an elegant and traditional wine, placing particular emphasis on the selection of the wooden casks used for ageing alongside a small number of 5 hl tonneaux. The result is a wine with a long history and tradition passed down from generation to generation, a well-defined style and a generous terroir. Starting from the 2018 harvest, all our wines will be certified as organic.

In the last few years our average production has been around 100.000 bottles of the following wines:
- vino Nobile di Montepulciano
- vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva
- Rosso di Montepulciano DOC
- Rosato di Toscana.

The Estate's wines can be considered traditional, they are suitable for ageing but also pleasant to drink when they are young.

The vineyards of the Gracciano Estate, owned by the della Seta Ferrari Corbelli Greco family, cover about 20 ha. Gracciano is one of the historic crus of Montepulciano. The average altitude is 300-350 m.a.s.l and the soil is mainly silty and clay: clay is prevalent in some parts and sand in others. This area is particularly suitable for growing grape vines, especially of the varieties that are used in the Vino Nobile blend. The Prugnolo Gentile variety reveals its full potential through a slow and complete ageing process, helped by good ventilation, the fluctuation between day and night temperatures and excellent exposure. Late frosts and hail storms are rare in the area.
The vineyards are divided into 4 crus: Casale, Toraia, Maramai and Podere Rovisci. Each has its own characteristics which differ according to the type of soil upon which they grow.
Casale grows on the softest terrain and produces harmonious, elegant and aromatic wines. The vines were replanted in 2008 and the grapes are used for the production of Rosso di Montepulciano.
The other three crus grow on a mostly clay soil, particularly the Podere Rovisci whose grapes produce the Vino Nobile Riserva.
The average age of the vines is 15 years. A section of the Maramai vineyard is over 40 years old.
The Estate's business philosophy has always been based on the respect of tradition and of the environment. For this reason no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used and every effort is made so that the wines fully reflect the characteristics of the terroir and that all technological procedures preserve the qualities of the raw material. Since 2015, The Gracciano Estate practices an organic viticulture.
The limited quantity of Riserva di Vino Nobile di Gracciano della Seta is produced by harvesting the best grapes only during the best vintage years.

Viticulture

From 2015 the Estate will turn to organic viticulture and use only copper and sulphur-based pesticides. In order to limit the production of the vines, no fertilizers have been used in the past 10 years and, when necessary, the ground is sown with leguminous or other herbaceous plants. Agronomic practices are used to balance the vines. As the area is windy, the plants stay healthy and there is little need to use pesticides.

Average production per hectare is contained through summer pruning and the selective thinning of grapes. Grapes are still harvested by hand so that the best fruit is selected while still on the plant.
